Training
After reviewing the current status of your DOT compliance program, we offer a tailored training program for your employees that focuses on areas that need attention. As a company, you are required to ensure that your employees are knowledgeable of DOT regulations that impact them.
We often see employees/drivers get mixed or incorrect information regarding DOT regulations. Our training program will ensure that all employees at your company, from dispatch to management to drivers, will be on the same page regarding their roles in keeping your company compliant. Our goal with this training will be to simplify convoluted and often gray-area topics into an easy-to-understand format.
CSA Monitoring and Improvement
CSA is a rating system implemented by the FMCSA to monitor and rate motor carriers based on their on-road performance, typically via roadside inspections. FMCSA uses these ratings to identify at-risk motor carriers for audits, as well as select vehicles for roadside inspections. Violations received during a roadside inspection will impact your CSA scores for two years. Additionally, certain violations will follow individual drivers on their personal federal record for a period of three years, regardless if they eventually move on to a different company.
At Smith Compliance we will analyze your CSA scores and present this data in an easy-to-understand format, as well as identify appropriate action plans to improve scores. Additionally, we can assist you with challenging any errant or incorrect violation you might’ve received in the past or may receive in the future.
Policy and Procedure Development
Your compliance will only be as good as the policies and procedures that you have in place as a company. We will review any current policies that you have in place to ensure that they meet the FMCSA requirements. If you have any policies that are absent or deficient, we will assist in the process of creating these policies and making them part of regular employee paperwork.
Continual Services
We offer continuous services that include regular on-site visits to conduct periodic audits and provide hands-on follow-up, as well as any additional training. We aim to give you peace of mind that your processes and procedures are being successfully implemented. We will act as your in-house DOT compliance expert without costly overhead expenses.

Whether you have a single person handling these duties or an entire team of people, in most instances certain DOT items typically will fall through the cracks. For many smaller operations, typically a single dispatcher or administrator is placed in charge of DOT compliance. These individuals often have many different time-consuming duties that can often take precedence over DOT compliance items. These items will often get pushed out and even completely neglected, which will compound the issues even further. Our goal is to review these processes in detail and act as a partner and expert resource for your company.

This part of DOT regulations is often misunderstood by many companies. Although your company might believe that it is not subject to these regulations, there are a few things to consider. Do you have trucks that cross state lines? Do you have trucks that tow trailers? Do you know the GVWR and GCWR of those units? Do you have drivers of these vehicles involved in interstate travel? If your answer is "yes" to any of these questions, then your company may be considered a regulated motor carrier and therefore, subject to all state and federal DOT regulations.
-
The answer to these questions could very well be yes, however, there are several factors to consider that can make this process much less burdensome for your company, while also keeping costs significantly down. At Smith Compliance will review your operations and determine what will be the most effective solution for your company when dealing with hours of service.

Any acute violations discovered, as well as identification that there is a lack of management controls in place, is a serious situation to find your company in. Fines and even total loss of operating authority are all possibilities depending on the severity of issues discovered. Do not put your company in a place where you wait to be blindsided by an audit or inspection before acting. Contracting with Smith Compliance will help put you in the best position to pass an audit and keep your company operating smoothly.
